Park(ing) Day

Each year during Park(ing) Day in Tech Square, the Student Planning Association (SPA) turns parking spaces into interactive installations, art, games, and places to pause, creating opportunities for passersby to participate in a larger discussion on parking land use.

Started in San Francisco in 2005, Park(ing) Day is an annual public, participatory project where people across the world advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets, according to the website. The first installation, by the Rebar design team, involved simply renting a metered parking space and turning it into a small park, complete with a rented bench and a fifteen-foot tree. In the following twenty years, the project has spread across the globe.

"Celebrating global Park(ing) Day at Tech Square is one of our school traditions," said Gulsah Akar, chair of the School. "This annual event reminds us that in the heart of urban landscapes, there's room for greenery, art, and play."
