Sustainable Cities Students Develop Climate Assessment

Students enrolled in the Sustainable Cities minor with the School of City and Regional Planning developed the first climate vulnerability assessment for Central Atlanta Progress.

Dr. Jairo Garcia, former Director of Climate Policies with the City of Atlanta and now part-time faculty with the School of City and Regional Planning, stated that this is a milestone for Atlanta to become a climate-resilient city.

"A climate vulnerability assessment is the first step, and an essential one, for developing a climate adaptation plan," said Garcia. "This study will move forward the City of Atlanta in climate preparedness and we should be very proud of it."

To achieve this goal, students used the United Nations Sustainable Development framework, selected and developed GIS maps, and use spatial analysis to determine what areas are the most vulnerable to climate change in downtown Atlanta.

This project was developed in conjunction with the Georgia Tech Serve-Learn Institute to assist the Central Atlanta Progress organization with its climate and sustainability plan, which is in development.
